The idea for Kismet was truly born out of necessity in dire times. Kismet Co-founder and CEO, Dr. Cierra Gromoff, and Head of Clinical, Dr. Arwin Cotas-Girard, were both working as child psychologists in community mental health when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Suddenly, all patient care was moved to the virtual setting and both patients and providers were faced with a stark adjustment.

This was especially painful for children and professionals working with them. Existing virtual solutions at the time were all oriented towards adults and work meetings. There were no telehealth platforms that catered specifically to the needs of children. Cierra and Arwin, along with other child providers, spent many unbillable hours prepping for sessions, trying to engage children online, many of whom had never had to interact with others through a screen. Despite their best efforts, appointment attendance continued to plummet and children’s symptoms worsened.

That’s because children are not tiny adults. They have their own hospitals, specialty providers, and medical instruments. They also need their own technology. Most telehealth platforms have primarily been designed for business meetings, adult engagement, and rely heavily on verbal communication. Data has shown this does not work for the pediatric population, especially in regards to engagement. Cierra realized that the only option was to create a telehealth platform built for children with all the providers’ needs in mind to help bridge this gap. Telehealth can be effective for children, but only with the right tools in hand.

Cierra ended up connecting with Christie Sander, a Silicon Valley veteran and brought this idea to life. The Kismet team began to form in late 2022, and the product went live to the public in the fall of 2023. Kismet Health is a collaborative care pediatric video platform, positioned to transform the way pediatric care is delivered. The innovative product marks a significant leap forward in pediatric healthcare, by providing accessible and high-quality care specifically designed for children and their families, while simultaneously supporting the clinical needs of providers.

With its proprietary technology and engaging digital playroom, Kismet provides a cost-efficient and accessible solution while enhancing the standard of care. Kismet is easy to use, with a few clicks one can access this HIPAA-compliant and browser-based platform from anywhere.

Promising early pilot results with Kismet show 90% of children exceeded their developmentally appropriate expected time in session by as much as 2.5x. In addition, 95% of children successfully completed full sessions with Kismet, exceeding the industry standard completion rate of less than 30%.

“Our mission is to make pediatric healthcare accessible, engaging, and exceptional for every child. At Kismet, we are taking a significant step towards achieving that goal and unlocking quality care for families everywhere. This is just the beginning for Kismet, and we are excited to be a leader in advancing the future of pediatric healthcare for generations to come," said Co-Founder, Christie Sander.
